			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It may be common sense to some of us that if you&#8217;re trying to grow a fan-base a good place to start is social media. I have seen apps launch time and time again that “use” social media but do not use social media. Now at this point you should have heard about social media and at least know the basics. You may have found this post through a social media outlet. Below, are some key points that you should take into consideration while trying to growing your fan-base. Additionally, some resources have been made available to provide further information.</p>

<h2>Be Authentic</h2>
<p>The key to cultivating your fan-base right from the start is being authentic. Now, if you are pushing your application, of course you’re going to want to highlight it with links or offers. However, this is NOT all that you should do. If you are using social media as a broadcast method, no one is going to come back for more information (unless you’re a news site, which you most likely are not). They know that you’re going tell them, “Hey, here is my great product.&#8221; If you properly engage your target market, fan-base, clients, etc. they will develop a genuine interest in what you are saying, and eventually return to hear more. Vin Diesel is a great example of how to interact with your fan-base on Facebook. He has built an enormous amount of fans (6,223,076) as a result of being authentic&#8211;engaging with them multiple times a day. (In depth breakdown by Mashable).<span> </span></p>
<h2>Provide Feedback/Communication</h2>
<p>Twitter has proven to be an amazing platform for providing issue issue correspondence and information tracking, thereby allowing you to follow what people are saying about your app, in real time. If you haven’t joined Twitter and you’re launching an application, you should. Media Temple (web host) has done a really great job at using this as a tech support line. They have a correspondent ready to answer your questions and help you complete your help request faster. I have had several issues and, after DMing (Twitter-short for &#8216;Direct Message&#8217;) my support request number, they have been more than speedy at initiating the resolution process. Shaun Inman (creator of fever &amp; mint) uses Twitter for tech support, but he uses it in a different way. He utilizes Twitter as a channel for updating consumers on the status of their pending emails, pertaining to his apps. This informs the user of Shaun&#8217;s progress with responding to emails and whether or not to expect an immediate response. A recent addition in this field that should be examined is TwelpForce, from BestBuy. They have recruited select professionals in certain areas of the company to manage their Twitter feed, resulting in an around-the-clock online customer service. With so many people driving the team, they have roared to 8,000+ updates (to put that in perspective: I have 13,000+ updates and have been on Twitter for more than a year) and are around to answer your tech questions. This is definitely a productive way for a business to embracing a medium to its full advantage.</p>
<h2>Gain Momentum</h2>
<p>When you are initially releasing your app into the wild, your goal is to build momentum and develop a fan-base. The quickest way to do that is through social media. Since most social media sites with mega users update in real-time, your product can literally spread to all surfaces of the globe overnight. Twitter has also been hailed as the “site killer”, due to the fact that if your tweet gains enough traction, and is RTed (&#8217;retweeted&#8217;, or reposting information you find useful to share to your followers,) it could crash your site due to an overload of traffic. It&#8217;s easy to believe that this could happen when people, who have over 1 million followers, target your site and retweet it.</p>
<h2>Connect &amp; Help the Community</h2>
<p>One of the most effective ways to grow your product and your brand is often overlooked. Marketers are on Twitter and Facebook screaming about how amazing their new book is and why you should buy it. Self-promotion is fine every so often, but social media is a bit of a give and take. If you do not help others out by cross-promoting their material, you in-turn will be labeled as a broadcaster rather than a converser. If someone helps you out, help them out in return. As a result of this, you are making connections that could turn out to be incredibly valuable in the future; you never know where things may end up.</p>

<p>We all have great ideas floating around in our heads but how do we get them out into the world without any help and startup cost/outside help? Bootstrapping. This is a term that is thrown around a good amount with start-ups and is not something that is &#8220;explained&#8221;. Wikipedia defines bootstrapping as:</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>Bootstrapping</strong> or <strong>booting</strong> refers to a group of metaphors that share a common meaning, a self-sustaining process that proceeds without external help. The term is often attributed to <a title="Rudolf Erich Raspe" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudolf_Erich_Raspe">Rudolf Erich Raspe</a>&#8217;s story <em><a title="wikisource:The Surprising Adventures of Baron Munchausen" href="http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/The_Surprising_Adventures_of_Baron_Munchausen">The Surprising Adventures of Baron Munchausen</a></em>, where the main character pulls himself out of a <a title="Swamp" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swamp">swamp</a>, though it&#8217;s disputed whether it was done by his hair or by his <a title="wikt:bootstrap" href="http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/bootstrap">bootstraps</a>.</p></blockquote>
<p>Now that we know the definition we can now venture into achieving the goal. Bootstrapping is a way for you to start your company or your app (or anything else) without any outside help. This is <span style="text-decoration: line-through"><em><strong>VERY important </strong></em></span><em><strong> CRUCIAL</strong></em> when you have an idea in your head and want it to be successful and get it into the public.</p>
<h2>Key Points:</h2>
<h3><strong>1. Be Prepared</strong></h3>
<p>This is something that should not be taken lightly and as with anything that affects your finances and your lively hood every possible solution should be explored before you &#8220;jump&#8221; into it. Now it may seem from first glance that Bootstrapping (since it requires no outside help) would be very easy for any sort of savvy person to just whip up something and sell it to the public. Not the case.  In a previous post: <em><a href="http://www.fuelyourapps.com/launching-your-app-are-you-committed/">Launching Your App: Are you Committed? </a></em>I talked about several things that sometimes people over look and this is not an exception. Make sure you have a timeline laid out even if its just rough. Make sure you know what the desired outcome is and work backwards and most importantly: <strong>Make sure you want to do this. </strong>This may sound dumb however, I can&#8217;t even think about how &#8220;cool sites&#8221; I have wanted to make  and start then think &#8220;I really don&#8217;t want to do this&#8221; and I give up. Make sure you have all this sorted out from the beginning.</p>
<h3><strong>2. Profit </strong></h3>
<p>I listened to <a href="http://twitter.com/noahkagan">Noah Kagan</a> (worked at Facebook back in the day) speak at <em><a href="http://www.fuelyourapps.com/awesome-inc-mini-conference-recap/">Awesome Inc. </a></em>about his failures when he first started. He talked about how he bought $15,000 Dell servers because he thought he would need them. Til this day he still has the dell servers and they are collecting dust in a rack somewhere. He was never able to use them. Point of this story? Concentrate on what makes you money so you can get on with what you are doing. Focus on getting money through the door so you can gain steam by getting the small fish that pay quickly instead of the large ones, that are slow to pay but pay big money.</p>

We are looking at a brand called Unblab that launched a splash site, then an updated in-depth site explaining their app. After that Unblab disappeared from twitter and stopped making updates for a period of months. Now they are back with a new site and another app to boot. However, the branding did not stay the same and is not as clean and crisp as it was before. Following the video in the post there will be questions for you to answer and have a discussion about if this hurt or helped the brand.</p>

However people always has a great idea of an application that could change the way others use, touch or interact with with the world. But not everyone thinks about the steps that you have to go through to make this a reality. There are several things for you to consider before you start making your dream app into a reality. The three main things to consider are your investments: Money, Time and Sanity. In this article we are going to make sure that you are ready to take the step into making your app. <strong> </strong></p>

<h2><strong>1. Money</strong></h2>
<p style="text-align: justify">Figuring out how to setup the logistics of paying for an app is something that people often just barge into without considering what it is going to take. Unless you are a developer/designer and can learn to whip out some lines of code in your sleep and design something while driving to work you are probably going have to hire someone that can.</p>
<h2>Developer</h2>
<p>A key point to remember if you are using a developer is you are going to want to use a good developer. This will save yourself some time and headaches in the long run. Don&#8217;t get sticker shock on what the cost of a good developer could be. After all they will be giving you the tools to have a great application that could sell all thousands of copies. <strong>DO NOT</strong> try and get a developer to split profits 50/50 as business &#8220;partnership&#8221; or ask them to do this for their portfolio or anything of the sort. If a developer wants to spend their time doing something for free it is going to be on their own ideas and not yours.</p>
<p>Furthermore, you asking them to do it for their portfolio or free is degrading all the time and effort they have put into making themselves a competent professional so save yourself the hassle and don&#8217;t do it. Now if your a developer your money that you invest will be a bit different, it would be in hardware/software to make the app and not in labor.</p>
<h2>Design</h2>
<p>Your app needs to have an interface that is intuitive and something of beauty. Now I am not saying that this thing has to have all the bells and whistles in the world from a design standpoint. Some of the best apps have simple interfaces. <strong>Remember K.I.S.S. Keep It Simple, Stupid</strong>. The idea is to make something that people can use without having to think about it. A well designed application will blend into the background letting the user <strong>DO</strong> what the app is supposed to do instead of trying to figure out how to use it. As with a developer a good designer is an investment and is not something you can just pick based on coin toss.</p>
<p>A designer is not wanting to do something for their portfolio or for free for the exposure. They like the developers lead very busy lives with extensive project time lines and if their free time are bettering themselves in their field. You offering them $200 for 60hrs worth of work or trying to make it a freebie will anger the designer, devalue their work and just make the entire situation a nightmare. Now before you have a designer make the interface <strong>MAKE SURE</strong> you know what you are wanting your application to do. The designer only knows what you tell them and cannot read your mind. Communication is a <strong>HUMONGOUS </strong>money saver when working.</p>
<h2>Marketing</h2>
<p>Another thing to consider is advertising. Are you going to sell this app based off of word of mouth or are you going to place ads? Marketing of your app is just as important as designing/developing it. So in order to &#8220;make the most&#8221; of your money consider all of these factors before you get started. If you don&#8217;t really have an idea on how to market your app sit down and think about: What steps can you take? What market will your app be sold in? How are you going to attract customers? Do I need a website?  Am I going to use social media? Etc etc. You can make the best app in the world but if no-one knows about it or where to get it from how are you going to make money?<br />

<h2><strong>2. Time</strong></h2>
<p>I know what your thinking &#8220;My app is only this one little simple thing&#8221;. Stop right there. Rewind and lets try this process again. Just because it is simple in theory does not mean that a developer/designer can just sneeze, wiggle his nose and it will automatically appear. This is very important to realize from the get-go. Maybe your simple idea takes ten complex steps to figure out and it needs X, Y and Z to work. Maybe X isn&#8217;t invented yet and the developer needs to figure out a way to make it work.</p>
<p>Remember these kind of things take time and cannot just be Googled, slapped into a code window and then given to you. Once you get a simple problem solved there maybe another issue&#8230; Your server may not be able to handle the load&#8230;. The application keeps crashing&#8230;. etc. etc. Just be ready for a realistic time table and having setbacks and errors. Going into the process with an open mind and thinking about the worst case scenario will make you less apt to blowing a gasket and driving yourself crazy.</p>

<p>Your mental state of well being will be pushed and beat on, abused and tested. Keep that in mind from the get-go. Just like these few things could happen, the app won&#8217;t work, your hosting will go down, your designer will be sick for 2 weeks. Things happen in life and creating a picture perfect time line and launch is setting yourself up for disappointment.</p>
<p>Let your people work. Watching them like a hawk is going to drive them crazy as well as yourself. &#8220;A watched pot never boils&#8221; is a perfect example. It does eventually boil but if you watch it you are consumed by it, engulfed in it and nothing else matters. If you do this with your application without taking time to  unplug and letting the people you paid do what they are supposed to do then you will go insane.</p>

<h2>Final Thoughts</h2>
<p>Hopefully this post has shed some light onto planning your app before you just run in there guns blazin&#8217;. This post was not meant to scare you out of making your app. It is a polite wake-up call before you get 3 months in and are wondering what you should do next.  Just remember to keep your head on straight and do the cliche&#8217; thing and &#8220;make lemonade when life gives you lemons&#8221;.</p>

<h2>Where did the idea of Brush Pilot come from?</h2>
<p>Well, I really wanted an app Like Brush Pilot, and after being frustrated trying the clunky java versions around and not having any luck finding anything suitable, I decided to take matters into my own hands. It was a risk, but I was certain that there were other people like me out there who could really use an app like Brush Pilot.</p>

<h2>At what point did you decide ok, this is going to become a reality?</h2>
<p>After I found a developer, we had some conversations about how long it would take and how much it would cost, and I decided that the benefits outweighed the risks, so I set things in motion and never looked back.</p>
<h2>How did you take the first few plunges into the app? Sketch out the app? Hire a developer? Do it yourself?</h2>
<p>Well, I started in Photoshop and went back and forth with my developer with how the app should look while he started the backend development. We made a few UI changes as we figured out which features we could include and after that, we started testing away.</p>
<h2>Where did your pricing come from? Affordability? Enough to cover your overhead? etc.</h2>
<p>I wanted it to be affordable. I know people have been waiting on this app for a long time and I wanted it to be affordable enough for anyone to enjoy it. Plus, I didn&#8217;t want to over-price it for version 1. There are still a ton of improvements we can make to Brush Pilot before it becomes a $20 app. I wouldn&#8217;t feel right charging more than $15 at this point in the app&#8217;s life.</p>

<h2>What were the key features you wanted to capture in Brush Pilot?</h2>
<p>Lightning fast previews was my top priority, and I have to say, my developer did a great job on that. The speed of Brush Pilot wouldn&#8217;t be possible without Spotlight technology, and I&#8217;ve had some complaints about relying on Spotlight, but let&#8217;s face it, Brush Pilot is up to 50x faster than ABR Viewer (open source Java app). I even tested it with 5.5 Gigs of brushes on an external HD and it only to 5-10 seconds to populate the file list. I&#8217;m very happy with the speed, and how lightweight the app turned out to be. Another thing I concentrated on, was the file system. I thought it was important for users to distinguish which of their brushes were installed, and which ones were not. This way you know what&#8217;s going to show up in you list of brushes when you fire up Photoshop. Also, the ability to install and delete was essential in order to truly be a useful app. I thought to myself &#8220;It&#8217;s nice to be able to preview the brushes, but if I have to open finder and move the files manually, it would just be a pain.&#8221; That&#8217;s just a few of the big ones we concentrated on.</p>

<h2>How have you been marketing the app? (soft release? Your blog? twitter ads etc)</h2>
<p>I started out with posting about it on my blog <a href="http://bittbox.com">BittBox.com</a>, then proceeded to Twitter, email, etc. I just recently got an affiliate program working, so if anyone has a Photoshop related website and wants to earn 20%, you can always drop me a line at brushpilot [at] gmail [dot] com.</p>
<h2>What is something you took away from the process that people making new apps like you did would gain insight from?</h2>
<p>It always takes longer than you think. I guess you could say the same about web design, but making an app, there are so many little things that can easily be overlooked. Test, Test, Test. Even in the early stages, send it out to people you can trust to test because everyone uses their computer differently and they might find a bug in 5 seconds that you haven&#8217;t found in 3 weeks. Also, keep an eye on Apple coming out with &#8220;Resolution Independent&#8221; UI for their software. From now on, to be on the safe side, I would do all my UI design in vector format.</p>
<h2>Have you been bitten by the app bug or are you already thinking of something else to design?</h2>
<p>I&#8217;m going to try and perfect Brush Pilot before I start thinking about anything else. There are still plenty of enhancements I&#8217;d like to see in version 2: Drag and Drop is a must. Renaming files, Shift + Select for installing/Deleting, full size PNG export, just to name a few.</p>
<h2>Did you design the logo for Brush Pilot and how did you come up with the name? Has it always been called this or has it changed?</h2>
<p>No, actually I hired a company that specializes in icon design, and they are very affordable. <a href="http://www.artua.com/">www.artua.com</a> I&#8217;m a graphic designer, but icon design is a different animal, so I decided to leave it to the pros.</p>

<p>He graduated from Oklahoma State University in 2005, with a BFA in Graphic Design and ended up getting a job at a small design firm in St. Louis. While in St. Louis, He started <a href="http://bittbox.com">BittBox.com</a> and after a while, ended up quitting my job to blog full time. Jay moved back to Oklahoma City where he currently runs BittBox, design fonts, and now is in the software business, so you can imagine, he spends most of his time emailing people theses days :)</p>

<h2>1. What brought you into the idea of making CurdBee?</h2>
<p class="MsoNormal">This was the time we were looking to smoothen the billing process since our inception in early 2004. At the beginning we had just a handful of client accounts to manage so the spreadsheet + .doc template solution was sufficient enough to send a decent invoice and keep track of the activity. But as we entered in to more contracts things got complicated with billing tuning to be a key priority with more work to do (e.g. periodic invoicing, collection tracking, etc.), which made us look for solutions available from paid to free, proprietary to open source, hosted to installable applications. There were quite a few excellent solutions but they were either beyond our budget or way too complex for what we wanted to. This made us think of creating our own simple solution to meet Vesess billing needs while saving time for more productive stuff. With this in mind, we created a single screen billing app and replaced our spreadsheet + .doc solution quite smoothly. Days passed and everyone started to talk about Web 2.0, with software as a service. New and innovative solutions were being added to the marked on a daily basis. We realized this would be the ideal time to enter the small business product market, which was an idea we had in the back of our minds for awhile. We selected our billing app which we developed for our own use as an entry point, and a few months down the line, CurdBee came in to play as a free service targeted at entrepreneurs/SMEs with similar needs to us, and yet enjoy simple solutions.<span> </span></p>
<h2>2. During your thoughts on branding and identity what other names did you toss around before you landed on CurdBee?</h2>
<p class="MsoNormal">That’s what happens more often. You spend most of your time picking the name, looking for the .com availability than concentrating on creating a better experience, something even we did in our other projects. But for some reason, whether you believe it or not, CurdBee was the first and the last name we came up with for our billing application. CurdBee was the first project name we assigned internally since calling it “the billing application project”. By the time we completed the product, all the team mates were in love with that name and even the .com was available. In our culture Curd is a symbol of success, purity and Bee on the other hand stands for the efficiency and team spirit, both of which worked well with our product.<span> </span></p>
<h2>3. What kind of hurdles did you have to overcome in making the CurdBee application?<span> </span></h2>
<p class="MsoNormal">While the design and development of the product was not easy by any means, we were able to execute the idea on par with our original intentions. The hardest part in getting CurdBee out the door, then, was adapting it to suit our clientele. As new players in this field, we were starting out from scratch, and a lot of what we did was a trial and error process as we worked hard to ensure that the features which our future users would want were included in the application. After a lot of testing and debugging, the first version of CurdBee went live almost year ago (June 2008) and we discovered that we had hit the nail on the head. People liked the product and we were lucky to get featured in LifeHacker, MSNBC, etc. which resulted in more account signups. Since then, we have been constantly evolving based on our users’ needs, and this is what we plan to do in the future as well. Being a team from outside the United States and Europe, we also had to work hard to win our users’ trust, and did so by offering a totally free product for about 10 months. After we had a steady user base, we naturally took the development of CurdBee to the next stage.</p>

<h2>4. If you were doing this all over again what is some insight that you could pass on to new app developers that would be beneficial?</h2>
<p class="MsoNormal">Know the purpose of your application and who will eventually use it. Do adequate research and find out what majority of the users want in common, and then aim to develop those features without complicating your product by overloading it with features. Especially in today’s vibrant post-Web 2.0 world, there really is no excuse for creating products that nobody uses. Get out there, find out what people want, and make it. Be humble and ready to change – your users will always be the ones to impart the lessons you need to learn. If you ignore them, they will ignore you.</p>
<h2>5. How important is keeping a clean and functional UI when making an app especially one that deals with something so critical like billing?</h2>
<p class="MsoNormal">For us it’s all about the UI. Simple, clean and functional interfaces. It doesn’t mean we ignore other stuff like code quality, scalability, security, etc. when it comes to apps, but we strongly believe that the majority of the people put more weight on what they see and how they interact compared to how good the backend is when selecting their products. Billing is a common function to any business whether you are a lawyer, web designer or a plumber. So as the designers, our objective was to make billing, something you enjoy irrespective of your knowledge, computer literacy, experience, etc.<span> </span></p>
<h2>6. Through CurdBee you can customize your colors to make it to your liking. How is customization important to keep a users experience positive?<span> </span></h2>
<p class="MsoNormal">Yes, CurdBee does allow users to customize their branding by changing colors and adding their logo to invoices. However with the introduction of the PRO version, we have gone couple of steps forward by letting the users have full control over their messages (invoice notifications, reminders, etc.) and have created a platform with that focuses on features such as recurring billing, estimates, etc. We really hope these customization options would create a positive user experience allowing more users to fulfill their needs at minimum cost. Everyone wants to feel unique, and at CurdBee, we pride ourselves in giving each of our users the ability to customize their experience. We don’t like it when applications tell us how we should behave, and believe very strongly that people should be the ones in control. At CurdBee, customizability is at the very core of our design philosophy, and something that we focus on in every project of ours.</p>

<h2>7. How do you discern what the right amount of customization is without loosing the integrity of your app?</h2>
<p class="MsoNormal">We do get requests for more features, better customization options so on and so forth from our passionate users and some of them are of real value. But then again we are following a wait and see approach in deciding which features, customization request to roll out as higher customization / flexibility could make CurdBee a complex application for the average user and those who with simple needs. We’ve seen simple, clean applications getting very complex in trying to make them all-in-one</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">solutions, and this, we feel, destroys the user experience. This is one of the main reasons why we implemented an on-demand architecture, so the user can make the decision regarding which features he or she needs and still keep the application clean, simple and functional.<span> </span></p>
<h2>8. How important is safety in making an application that deals with users crucial information like billing?</h2>
<p class="MsoNormal">Safety has always been a top priority for us at Vesess. From our early days, through the development of CurdBee and the recent release of CurdBee PRO, the integrity of our users’ data is of paramount importance to us. While we do undertake all the usual precautions when it comes to our server side security, we also recently began offering SSL secured billing with CurdBee PRO, a feature that many users will no doubt find attractive. In terms of code, all core components of CurdBee are developed and tested entirely in house, and we are therefore 100% sure of the quality of the application.</p>
<h2>9. CurdBee offers PayPal and Google Checkout integration as well as multiple currencies and PDF support. How vital is integration?</h2>
<p class="MsoNormal">Sending a bill to your client online could certainly make life easy for most of the people when they have more important stuff to attend. But what if we can go that extra mile by allowing busy customers to accept payments online? What if we can let them download PDFs directly and send it via email if they like? They will save both time and money which will make a significant difference at the end of the day, isn’t it? Everyone is trying to go global and do business with the world. So, if you can send bills in the currency preferred by your customer, won’t he or she be happy? At Vesess we use at least four currencies when working with clients from different continents and we have experienced this first hand, which convinced us to become one of the first billing apps to allow multiple currencies and make our product a usable one for the majority of people around the world.<span> </span></p>

<h2><span> </span>10. Do you think the final outcome of making the app outweighed all of the struggle while making it?</h2>
</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Most definitely. It is a truly a joy to open up our stats page every morning and see new sign ups, and sent invoices. As a SME it’s truly a privilege to have the opportunity of helping so many others like us. The development process was long and difficult, but the rush of creating a web application that is used the world over cannot really be explained in words! It really is a wonderful feeling to be of service to others. This is our first attempt at developing an application and it was a great learning for the entire team. Although we had experience creating apps for our clients, we mostly handled the tech side of those but here we had to get the app out and then start working really hard to get the word across to our future users as well.<span> </span>With the PRO version coming into play we have opened a new revenue stream for our product and it’s encouraging to see more and more users going PRO, which in turn confirms that they value our service and are willing to support us to make CurdBee an even better product.</p>
